The Habitat ReStore in Seaside will open with a ribbon cutting at 10:00am. Welcome Home Ogarrio Family

On Saturday, May 7th, volunteers, sponsors, donors, friends, and neighbors, welcomed the Ogarrio family to their new home. This is the third home completed on Los Esteros Court. Four more lots are slated for construction in the coming years. Over the course of ten months, 259 volunteers contributed 5,749 hours to build this energy-efficient home. The new homeowners contributed over 500 volunteer hours on home construction and at the Habitat ReStore. Thank you Plantronics, Cisco Systems and Bay Federal Credit Union for being House Sponsors! Not only was their funding critical to complete this home, their employees helped built it!

April 23rd Walk to Build

Spring is coming, and it’s time to start building again! Join us Saturday April 23 to kick off the construction season at our new build site, 430 Frederick Street right next to Santa Cruz Bible Church. We’re going to tour the new site, meet future Habitat homeowners, and take a walk through Arana Gulch to enjoy the nearby nature. There will be light refreshments and fun times. The walk is a pretty 1.28 miles with a mixture of pavement and very easy dirt. We are asking for a $10 donation to help us get the materials to frame the house. 30 bucks gets you an event t-shirt. 50 bucks allows you to sign a stud, and be a permanent part …

ReStore Hours are Expanding

Thanks to great community support over the last 3 years, we’ve decided to expand our ReStore hours. Starting March 1st, the Santa Cruz ReStore will be open Tuesdays from 10am to 2pm! Donations will be accepted at our donation center around the side of the building (719 Swift St) from 10am to 1:30pm, and volunteer opportunities will now be available from 8am to 2pm. Report from the 2016 California Habitat Advocacy Day

According to the Center for Housing Policy 1st quarter 2014 Paycheck to Paycheck Ranking, 13 out of the top 15 most expensive metro areas for homeownership in the nation are in California. This year Santa Cruz County moved from the number 4 position to the number 3 position on this list. Local, state and federal revenues have been jeopardized over the last five years due to the depletion of state prop IC funds, federal funds and the elimination of local redevelopment agencies. While Habitat for Humanity continues building affordable homes in partnership with very low and low-income families, we also advocate for changing systems, attitudes, policies and institutional behaviors that help prevent poverty housing.
